New home in Germany
The arrival of the so-called guest workers in West Germany and contract workers in the GDR demanded something from both sides: the new arrivals and the long-established. In everyday life, the two groups repeatedly encountered points of contact. When working or shopping, celebrating or praying, the question arose as to whether one would rather stay alone or approach each other. The arrival in Germany was not always easy for the guest and contract workers. Language and culture were not familiar, financial and social possibilities often precarious. The images document separate areas of life, but also places where encounters took place.
